K’ojnajik: Music and Folk Art of the Guatemalan Highlands
Release: 2008
K’ojnajik (K’iche language) translates to “the sound of cutting wood.” Marimbas, acoustic guitars, wood carvings…
This is a 43 minute film shot and edited by Geoff Hawryluk in Western Guatemala, April-May 2008. Performances and various segments filmed in Quetzaltenango, Antigua, Guatemala City, Panajachel and Monterrico.
Features a dozen musical performances- traditional marimba groups, evangelical folk-rock groups, an outdoor orchestral performance, latin lounge music, and a variety of street performers.
Highlights also include 3 segments displaying beautiful, grotesque and bizarre local religious art; a funeral march for the Virgin of Guadalupe; and some of the strangest AM radio recordings anyone will ever hear.
